President Prabowo Subianto Tuesday (05/27) attended the 16th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC), Malaysia.
In commencing his remarks, President Prabowo extended appreciation to Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr for his leadership as Chairman of the Summit.
“We gather today to commemorate 30 years of cooperation and strategic planning. The benefits of BIMP-EAGA have been felt not only by governments but also by the people—farmers, fishermen, traders, and youth—living in border areas,” President Prabowo said in his remarks.
According to the Head of State, the BIMP-EAGA has made notable progress in enhancing trade, tourism, and investment across the subregion. However, he noted that the region has yet to fully unlock its potential as the engine of growth for rural and border communities.
“Let us seize this moment and our meeting today to reflect on our shortcomings and chart a course for the future. Indonesia is fully committed to ensuring that BIMP-EAGA becomes a model of subregional resilience and rapid economic growth,” the President said.
On the security front, President Prabowo highlighted the success of joint patrols between BIMP-EAGA member countries that reduced incidents of piracy in the waters surrounding Sulawesi, Sabah, and the Southern Philippines. He also expressed gratitude to the Philippine and Malaysian Governments for the collaboration.
“This subregional cooperation has not only advanced economic development but also strengthened regional security,” he added.
President Prabowo also reiterated Indonesia’s support for the development of new economic corridors, including proposals in the permanent sector.
“We fully support Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar’s initiative to establish a special task force to realize this vision,” he concluded. (BPMI Presidential Secretariat) (GWH/MUR)
