President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (09/18) officially kicked off the 10th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention and Exhibition (IIGCE) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta.
“Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources has said I have visited three geothermal power plants. What surprised me during the visit was that we have excellent opportunities because many investors are looking for green energy as well as new and renewable energy. We have enormous potentials reaching 24,000 megawatts, and we have worked on it but we have to speed up our endeavors,” the President said.
The President went on to say that Indonesia, as the owner of large geothermal potential that constitutes 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential, only utilizes 11 percent of its geothermal energy potential, adding that Indonesia is also committed to playing an important role in a global endeavor for green economy, green industry, and transition to green energy.
“We are aware that to achieve green transition, every government in developing countries faces a dilemma of price affordability,” the President said, adding that fair energy access and technology are pivotal to improve efficiency.
According to the President, cooperation between the Government, business entities, researchers, and communities are also important to address the issue of climate change.
“Climate change is our common problem and a global problem for governments in developed countries, governments in developing countries, entrepreneurs, researchers, and communities around the globe,” the President said.
The President expressed hope that the IIGCE would be a platform for sharing risks, sharing burdens, and sharing profits in a balanced proportion.
“In this decade, the geothermal power plant has been operated by Pertamina, PLN, Ministry of Finance and two private companies. I hope we will carry on our endeavor for green transition to achieve inclusive prosperity, equitable energy access, and a better world,” the President remarked. (FID/ABD) (RI/EP)
