In the 2024 World Competitiveness Ranking by the Institute for Management Development (IMD), Indonesia ranked 27th, jumping from 34th in the previous year.
Following this, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Monday (06/24) during the Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta expressed his excitement over the rise in Indonesia’s competitiveness ranking amid uncertain global economic conditions.
The current ranking, President Jokowi continued, shows that Indonesia has surpassed the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Japan, the Phillippines, and Türkiye.
“We have to be grateful for this. With this ranking, we know our position. As I said earlier, it is not easy to improve our ranking amid current global uncertainties,” he said.
On that occasion, President Jokowi said that the weakening currency, the decrease in productivity, and political instability in Malaysia and Japan caused their ranking to drop. Thus, the President reminded his administrations to keep an eye on the current national and global economic conditions.
“It means that political stability is vital. Currency stability is important. The increase in productivity plays a crucial role,” he added.
The Head of State further said that many issues need to be resolved, including health and education infrastructures and the science and technology sectors.
“These issues must become our concern so that we can continue improving our competitiveness ranking every year,” the President said.
Furthermore, President Jokowi called on all his administrations to maintain political stability.
“Political stability must become our main concern. It will avoid political turbulence and ensure a smooth transition from the current to the next administration. The global community will keep an eye on it,” he remarked. (DA/ABD) (AP/RAS/MUR)
