President Prabowo Subianto Thursday (02/06) at the Presidential Palace had a meeting with Minister for Investment and Downstreaming/Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani to discuss strategies to strengthen investment in developing electrical vehicle industry in Indonesia.
In his press statement after the meeting, Rosan explained that Indonesia has a huge potential to play an active role in electric vehicle industry, given its abundant nickel resources and development in battery ecosystem.
However, he also highlighted that to date the production of national electric vehicle remains limited.
“We have the potential from the nickel resources to the battery ecosystem covering the recycling process. However, the electric cars are not available yet. Meanwhile, we are committed to net zero emission policy in 2060, or even sooner as President Prabowo Subianto wishes,” Rosan said.
Rosan also mentioned that today Indonesia still relies on foreign companies’ investment, such as Hyundai, BYD, and Wuling that have built their manufactures in Indonesia; yet, he emphasized that Indonesia should have a more significant role in this industry.
“Our car production is around 1.2 million per year, and it is growing, and expected to reach 2.5 million in 2030. So, why can’t we have a bigger role than that?” Rosan said.
Asked about the brands that have entered Indonesian market, Rosan stressed that the Government is not only focusing on foreign investment but is also evaluating the potential development of national electric vehicle.
“We already have Maung. This probably can be developed further, we will discuss it and work on it,” Rosan mentioned.
Through this measure, the Government, he added, hopes to accelerate the development of national electric vehicle and to make Indonesia a key player in the global supply chain. (Bureau of Press, Media, and Information of Presidential Secretariat/DNS) (AW/EP)
